Keeping Your Bathroom Effortlessly Clean: Tips & Tricks

The bathroom is a heavily used space, and it can also be one of the most time consuming to keep clean and hygienic. Mould, mildew, germs and soap scum can soon build up, making the bathroom unpleasant to use, damaging surfaces, and even presenting a threat to health

However, with the right fittings, cleaning materials and techniques, keeping the bathroom clean doesn’t need to be an uphill battle. Here are some tips that can transform your bathroom into a sparkling and low-maintenance haven.

Easy clean fixtures and fittings

Frameless shower screens

Opt for frameless shower screens that can be held in place with a stainless steel U channel. This will minimise the amount of joins and edges where mould and soap scum can accumulate. To keep your frameless shower screen clean and sparkling, give it a quick spritz with a cleaning agent or mixture of water and distilled vinegar after each use, and wipe dry.

This will reduce the frequency with which you need to carry out deep cleaning, and help to keep any limescale buildup or mould growth.

For further time-saving and even less work, look for glass shower screens with a hydrophobic coating that are designed to repel water. This is especially useful if you live in an area with hard water, which has a high mineral content and leaves mineral deposits on surfaces.

Self-cleaning toilets

Cleaning the toilet is understandably the least favourite of household chores, but unfortunately the prospect of not cleaning it is even worse. The latest toilet designs include self-cleaning models, which could just be your dream come true.

They usually work via a mechanism that is separate from the regular flushing button, triggering a higher pressure flush combined with disinfectants that can shift any waste that might otherwise be left behind. The shape of the bowl is also designed to minimise staining, and the bowl is coated with specialised cleaning agents.

The materials of the bowl will usually be non-porous to further reduce the buildup of undesirable residue.

Non-porous & anti-fingerprint countertops

Materials such as quartz are non-porous and easier to keep clean than porous materials such as marble or granite, because they are less prone to staining and water damage. For a further level of cleanliness, opt for anti-fingerprint finishes for your bathroom fittings and fixtures that are designed to repel oils.

This will mean that your bathroom will look pristine even after a quick wipe over, reducing the time and effort spent on scrubbing and polishing.

Wall-hung sanitaryware

Opt for wall-mounted toilets and hand basins that make keeping the floor clean easier, and prevent dirt and grime from building up around the base.

Anti-germ walls and flooring

Some types of flooring and wall coverings have antimicrobial coatings that can also resist mould growth. Large format tiles reduce the amount of joins and grout lines, which are particularly prone to accumulating dirt and mould. Luxury vinyl tiles are a particularly affordable and low-maintenance material.

Touchless taps and soap dispensers

Touchless technology is now a standard feature in public bathrooms to minimise surface contact and reduce the spread of germs, and it is becoming increasingly popular in homes. It is obviously more hygienic and also means that the fittings are much easier to keep clean.

Keeping it looking great

Once you have invested in a low-maintenance bathroom, but a simple routine in place to keep it spotless. Make sure the bathroom is well-ventilated with an extractor fan, or by opening the window after you have had a bath or shower.

Keep your cleaning tools in good condition and store them altogether in a caddy so they are to hand for a quick clean when you spot something that needs attention.

Useful products to have include microfibre cloths, and squeegee, and anti-bacterial floor wipes. Place filters over drains in the bath and shower to prevent blockages, and spend 20 minutes or so every week on a regular maintenance clean to prevent escalation of any issues.
